George Griffiths – Bury St Edmunds & Ipswich

George GriffithsGeorge, who is originally from New Zealand, is a qualified Accountant and spent many years working for a number of motor dealerships. Redundancy provided George with the motivation to work for himself. A personal recommendation is the best possible advertisement, and that’s what George received from a good friend, Dave Quinn, the successful franchisee at Driver Hire Chelmsford.

“I did also look at a number of other franchises, but settled on this one, as much as anything because it is a people business. I wanted to get out of the back office and into the front line. Also, I knew that this area had been successful for Driver Hire in the past – there was clearly lots of potential.”

Working alongside his wife Jacqui and three staff, George has built up a business with sales reaching £1m per year, and to cap it all, was named Driver Hire ‘Franchisee of the Year’ in 2011. So what is George’s recipe for success?

“I’ve had lots of support from Driver Hire, especially in the early days, but a lot of the success is down to your own desire and motivation, and it can be demanding. I once spent ages finding a driver for a job that would only make about £15 profit – but I wanted to do long term business with that customer so it was worth it.

“With every customer, it’s about talking to people, understanding their businesses and influencing their purchasing decisions.”
